The current public Coast Guard program uses abdominal circumference, legacy body-fat assessment, and a fitness-test pathway rather than an official WHtR screening method.

The current public Coast Guard program does not publish WHtR as its official screening method. For an informational check, record height and measure the waist midway between the lowest palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest. Keep the tape horizontal and read after a normal exhale. Divide waist by height using the same units. This page uses the public department-wide baseline of less than 0.55 and must not be used as an official Coast Guard determination.

How to calculate Coast Guard WHtR

Record height in inches to the nearest half inch, or enter the centimeter equivalent for automatic conversion.
Measure waist parallel to the floor at the midpoint between the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest, typically at or just above the belly button.
Record measurements in inches rounded down to the nearest 0.5 inch, then divide waist by height.
Compare the reported ratio with 0.55 department-wide reference, not Coast Guard compliance.
