How to calculate Air Force WHtR

  1. Record height in inches to the nearest half inch, or enter the centimeter equivalent for automatic conversion.
  2. Measure the waist three times at the midpoint between the lowest rib and top of the hip bone, after a normal exhale. Round each down to half an inch. Take an additional reading if the measurements differ by more than one inch.
  3. Average the three closest readings, round the average down to half an inch, divide by height, and truncate the ratio to two decimal places. This calculator does not determine a PFRA score or pass/fail.
  4. Compare the reported ratio with 0.55 reference, not PFRA pass/fail.

What happens next?

Follow current Air Force and unit guidance for repeat readings, official recording, and any required follow-up. AFMAN 36-2905 paragraph 3.15.4.7 requires secondary body-fat assessment when WHtR exceeds 0.55 and PFRA standards are not met. A ratio alone does not determine that outcome.
